The cost for licensing unaltered pets is higher than for licensing spayed
or neutered pets in order to promote sterilization and to reduce pet overpopulation.
Note: Overpayments of $3.00 or less will be applied as a donation to Friends
of the Oakland Animal Shelter (FOAS). If you would like to make a voluntary
donation to FOAS, please note the amount of the donation on your paperwork
and add it to your license fee.
Due Date
By ordinance, licenses are due within 90 days of your pet’s vaccination
date or prior license expiration date.
A late fee of $15.00 will be added for late
licenses and additional $15.00 for every additional month late up to $45.00.
Payment Options
By Mail: If you are licensing by mail,
you may pay for your license with a check or money order made payable to "Oakland
Animal Services".
In person: You can pay for your license at 1101 29th Ave, Oakland, CA 94601
If you have received a notice in the mail and no additional paperwork
is required to complete your license, you may be eligible to pay
for your license online with a major credit card. A $1.75 convenience
fee will be added for each transaction.
Required Paperwork
A current rabies vaccination certificate is required if the rabies vaccination
on file has expired. Please check your certificate for correct address
and pet information.
Your dog’s microchip number is required if it is not already on
file. All dogs in the City of Oakland are required to be microchipped.
Proof of spay/neuter, such as a signed statement from a veterinarian or
an invoice for services, is required if the pet has been altered since
the last licensing period and you are applying for the lower spayed/neutered
license fee.
Proof of owner’s age is required if you are applying for the reduced-rate
senior license. A photocopy of any paperwork showing the owner’s age
or date of birth will be accepted.
Residents of the City of Oakland may have their pet microchipped at the Oakland Animal Shelter for $10.00. No appointment is required.
Note: Please send legible copies of your paperwork and maintain a copy
for your records. If you are renewing a prior license, you will receive
only a receipt unless you also paid for a replacement tag during renewal.
