Licensing Ordinance

All dogs in the City of Eugene with a set of permanent canine teeth or 6 months old, whichever comes first, must have a current rabies vaccination and must be licensed with the City of Eugene within 5 days of being in the city.

Licensing Locations

You may license your pet in person at the Greenhill Humane Society at 88530 Greenhill Rd. in Eugene, the City of Eugene Spay and Neuter Clinic at 3970 W 1st Ave in Eugene. Please bring your pet's rabies vaccination certificate and spay/neuter certificate (if applicable) with you.

You may also purchase a dog license at participating veterinary clinics, if you are an established client. Click here for a current listing of participating clinics.

Please note that voluntary cat licenses are not available at veterinary clinics.

Required Paperwork

1. A current rabies vaccination certificate is required if the rabies vaccination on file has expired. Please check your certificate for correct address and pet information.
2. Proof of spay/neuter is required if the pet has been altered since the last licensing period and you are applying for the lower spayed/neutered license fee. The pet's rabies vaccination certificate may indicate the spay/neuter status. Alternate proof items include a signed statement from a veterinarian or an invoice for services.
   
3. If this is a service animal, please include a completed service dog application.
4. Voluntary cat licenses do not require a rabies certificate or proof of spay/neuter.

Your paperwork will not be returned to you, so please retain a copy of your documents for your records.

On July 1, 2012, the City of Eugene took over licensing responsibilities for Eugene dogs from Lane County. A new City of Eugene license tag will be included free of charge the first time you license your pet through the city. Please discard your pet's old Lane County tag when you receive the new City tag. Please only pay the replacement tag fee if your pet has previously received a City of Eugene tag which is now lost or unreadable.

The cost for licensing unaltered or fertile pets is higher than for licensing spayed or neutered pets in order to promote sterilization and to reduce pet overpopulation.

Due Date

Payment for your license is due within 45 days of the expiration of your current license. If you are licensing for the first time, you must purchase a license within 5 days of obtaining a pet with a set of permanent canine teeth or over the age of 6 months old, or within 5 days of moving into the City of Eugene.

A late fee of $15 is added to the license fee if your license is not purchased by the due date. Late fees do not apply to voluntary cat licenses.
