- Licenses may be purchased for 1, 2 or 3 years as long as the rabies vaccination is valid for the same period. Rabies laws state that the license term cannot exceed the rabies expiration date.
- Senior Discount – Proof of senior status must be enclosed.
- Service dogs must be licensed in person at the Solano County Animal Shelter.
The cost for licensing unaltered or fertile pets is higher than that for licensing spayed or neutered pets in order to promote sterilization and to reduce pet overpopulation and starvation.

Payment for your license is due within: 30 days of ownership of the dog, 30 days of a puppy receiving the rabies vaccination (minimum 4 months of age), or 30 days of becoming a new resident of Solano County. If you are renewing a Solano County license, your payment is due within 30 days after the expiration date.
By ordinance, a late fee is added to each license not purchased within 30 days.
You may license by mail and pay for your license with a check or money order made payable to “Solano County Dog Licensing."
You may license online and pay for your license with a major credit card. A convenience fee will apply per transaction. Multiple pets can be licensed in one transaction.
You may license in person at Solano County Animal Shelter, Dixon City Hall, Benicia City Hall, Rio Vista Police Department or Benicia-Vallejo Humane Society. Payment options vary by location.Your license will be mailed to you. Please bring a copy of your pet's current rabies certificate and proof of spay/neuter.
- Current rabies vaccination certificate if the vaccination has expired. Check your certificate for correct address and pet information.
- Spay/Neuter certificate if your pet has been spayed or neutered since the last licensing period.
- Proof of age is required to receive the discounted fees for senior citizens age 65 and over.
Your paperwork will not be returned to you, so please retain a copy of your documents for your records.
