I have lost a pet: what should I do?
If an Animal Services Officer finds your pet and your pet is wearing a current license tag on its collar, Animal Services will try to contact you. If another resident finds your pet with its license tag, they may call the phone number on the license tag and you will be put in touch with the person who found the pet.
If your pet has been lost, Animal Services recommends that you visit the shelter to look for your pet.
Why should I license?
Registration helps Animal Services identify family pets should an animal become lost. The fees from registration are used to care for animals and investigate complaints about stray animals, among other services. In addition, pet registration also helps to promote responsible pet ownership and to reduce the tragedies associated with lost pets and pet overpopulation.
Also, pet registration helps prevent the spreading of rabies. Rabies is a constant health threat, and rabies vaccinations are good for your pet’s health. Did you know that rabies is 100 percent fatal for humans if not treated properly? Pet registration helps Animal Services monitor compliance with local and state rabies vaccination laws.
What are the licensing requirements?

Due Date
Payment for your license is due within 30 days of your pet’s vaccination date or prior license expiration date.License Term
If your pet has a 1-year rabies vaccination, your license will be valid for one year from the date you registered your pet. If your pet received a 3-year rabies vaccination, your license will be valid for 3 years from the date that you registered.
Why was licensing privatized?
The City of Irving chose to privatize pet registration in 2008 to promote the registration program, to increase the cost effectiveness of the program, and to provide additional services to its residents. Fees from pet registration are deposited to the city and benefit the animals in their care.
