Licensing Ordinance

All dogs 4 months of age and older must be licensed with Fairfax County and must be licensed annually.

Mailing Address

To license by mail:

  1. Enclose copies of all required paperwork. The license application below may be downloaded and included, but it is not required.
  2. Determine the correct license fee for each of your dogs.
  3. Make your check or money order payable to “Fairfax County.” Please do not send cash.
  4. Mail your paperwork and payment to:

Required Paperwork

  1. A current rabies vaccination certificate is required if the vaccination on file has expired. Rabies vaccination certificates must not expire prior to the start of the new tag year on January 1st and must be current as of the date of licensing. Please check your certificate for correct address and dog information.
  2. Diplomat owners must provide Diplomatic ID to receive the discount.
  3. Military owners with residence outside Virginia must provide Leave and Earning Statement showing Home of Record other than Virginia.

Your paperwork will not be returned to you, so please retain a copy of your documents for your records.

Due Date

Payment for your new or renewed license is due by January 31st. If you are licensing for the first time, you must purchase a license when obtaining a dog over the age of 4 months by January 31st. Licenses are valid through December 31st each year.
